GEO vs. SEO: How AI Search Changes the Game

Two Different Games

When someone searches Google the traditional way, they see a list of links. SEO is the practice of getting your link ranked near the top of that list.

When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews a question, they get a synthesized answer — with (sometimes) citations. GEO is the practice of getting your brand into those citations.

These are different mechanisms with different signals, different techniques, and different measurement approaches. But they're not competing — they're complementary.

What SEO Still Does Well

Traditional SEO remains valuable. It gets you:

  • Visible in blue-link search results (still a majority of search traffic)
  • Authority signals that AI engines also respect (backlinks, mentions, E-E-A-T)
  • Technical infrastructure that AI crawlers benefit from (fast pages, structured HTML, proper indexing)

Good SEO is the foundation. Without it, GEO is harder to achieve.

What GEO Adds on Top

GEO requires additional work that SEO doesn't cover:

llms.txt A new file standard (like robots.txt for AI) that tells AI systems what's on your site and how to use it. Most sites don't have one yet.

AI-structured content AI engines prefer short, factual, citable passages — not marketing prose. Restructuring content into clear Q&A sections and factual statements increases citation frequency.

Schema markup JSON-LD structured data helps AI understand your content type: product, review, FAQ, how-to. Without schema, AI engines have to guess.

Per-platform optimization ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews each have different citation patterns. Perplexity heavily weights Reddit and YouTube. Google AIO weights schema-rich content. Knowing which platforms matter for your audience shapes your GEO strategy.

AI crawler access Many sites block AI crawlers unintentionally through robots.txt rules written before AI search existed. Auditing and correcting this is one of the fastest GEO wins available.

The Practical Priority Order

If you're starting from zero, here's where to focus:

  1. Fix crawler access first — if GPTBot and ClaudeBot are blocked, nothing else matters
  2. Add llms.txt — low effort, high signal
  3. Audit your schema markup — fill gaps for your key content types
  4. Restructure content for citability — rewrite key pages in Q&A format
  5. Build brand presence off-site — get on YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, Wikipedia where relevant

How to Know Where You Stand

You can't improve what you can't measure. A GEO audit tells you exactly which of the six signals are failing — and what to fix first.
